When you put four of Asia’s top jazzmen on the same stage you can expect nothing less than an extraordinary power-packed performance.
The Asian Jazz All-Stars Power Quartet is the coming together of Jeremy Monteiro, one of Asia’s most prolific jazz keyboardist & composers from Singapore; Eugene Pao, arguably Asia’s top jazz guitarist from Hong Kong; Tots Tolentino, one of Asia’s most virtuosic saxophonists from the Phillipines; and Chanutr Techatana-nan (aka Hong) from Thailand, one of the most innovative and exciting drummers to emerge in the Asian jazz scene in recent years.
Eugene’s stratospheric guitar lines & power riffs; Jeremy’s synthesis of bluesy organ licks coupled with Ravel-esque harmonies; Tots’ kaleidoscopic sound shapes & melodic tapestries; plus Hong’s groovy swing juxtaposed with his innovative polyrhythmic embellishments will stimulate you intellectually and warm your hearts at the same time.
Come meet this most Powerful band at the HKAPA’s HKJC Amphitheatre on November 30, 2012.
Individual Biographies of Musicians:
Jeremy Monteiro (Pianist-Organist-Composer, Singapore)
Jeremy Monteiro is one of the foremost jazz pianists/organists in Asia. He started his international career on the main-stage of the Montreux Jazz Festival which Festival Director Claude Nobs called ‘an unforgettable concert of the first 22 years of Montreux.’ This Cultural Medallion winner has released more than 20 jazz albums as leader and has performed with legendary jazz musicians Toots Thielemans, James Moody, Ernie Watts, Michael Brecker, and Cassandra Wilson, to name a few. It is no wonder that Monteiro has been referred to as Singapore’s ‘King of Swing’ by the Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Japan press. Just recently, the organ trio ORGANAMIX led by Jeremy was nominated at the 10th Independent Music Awards; one of the highest accolades for independently produced music.

Eugene Pao (Guitar, Hong Kong)
Eugene Pao is Hong Kong’s most publicly recognized jazz musician whose name is synonymous with jazz in the city. Such reputation cannot be more deserving as Eugene has been at the vanguard of promoting jazz in the territory through his performances and recordings over the last twenty plus years. Jazz greats whom he has performed with on stage include Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Terumasa Hino, Freddie Hubbard, Bob Berg, Jackie McClean, Joe Pass, Ulf Wakenius, Ernie Watts, Martin Taylor, James Moody, Bill Bruford, Jeff Berlin, Stu Hamm, Bobby McFerrin, Russell Ferrante, Eric Marienthal, and many more. Throughout the last two decades, Eugene Pao has truly established himself as Hong Kong’s premier jazz guitarist. He continues to travel the world, performing at international jazz festivals, concert halls, jazz clubs, and also to take part in select recording projects.

Tots Tolentino (Saxophone, Philippines)
Tots’ style of playing has been described by numerous critics as “passionate” as well as “articulate”. Tots’ is probably the most distinct and influential sax-sound in the Philippines today. After studying with Joe Viola, Jimmy Mosher, and George Garzone at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Tots’ returned to his homeland Philippines to pursue a career as a soloist and session musician. He has played alongside Terumasa Hino and McCoy Tyner, while also leading his own ensembles. He has been a regular figure at numerous jazz festivals including The North Sea Jazz, JakJazz, Mt. Fuji Jazz, and Java Jazz. Currently, Tots’ heads the Jazz Studies program at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, spreading the gospel of jazz to the youths of today and young musicians of tomorrow.
Hong Chanutr Techatana-nan (Drums, Thailand)
Drummer Hong Chanutr Techatana-nan, considered to be a leading jazz drummer in Thailand, is one of the few drummers in Asia able to play in the cutting edge style of modern jazz drummers Bill Stewart and Ari Hoenig, whilst infusing his own character into the mix. Hong started drumming professionally in 1995 and has since built up some reputation for himself in Bangkok's music scene by winning the award for “Best Drummer in the Open League Category” in Thailand's first Drum Contest in 2002, and also by performing with top jazz musicians like Ernie Watts and Eric Marienthal. Hong is co-members with Jeremy Monteiro of the organ Trio ORGANAMIX which was nominated for the prestigious Independent Music Awards. He has performed at top regional jazz festivals such as the Thailand International Jazz Festival, Kota Kinabalu Jazz Festival, Penang Island Jazz Festival, and Miri Jazz Festival. At present, Hong teaches at the music faculty of Silpakorn University, Thailand.
